Getting out of bed switches from intolerable to mildly exciting when I remember what's around the corner: breakfast.

A well-known culprit is stress, but happiness, sadness, frustration and boredom are just as guilty in causing us to turn to food for solace or distraction. It's very often not genuine hunger that's making us look to eat.

This phenomenon is most disheartening when it occurs in the context of dieting. Someone blows his or her diet, and feels upset and remorseful about the slip-up. In response, said individual goes on a binge to deal with the negative feelings. It's a highly destructive cycle.

Thus, it's exceedingly important to separate food and emotions. If you feel hungry when you know you've eaten within the past hour or two, ask yourself, "Am I hungry? Or is there something I'm hurt/stressed/anxious about?" Tell yourself you are going to find an activity to keep you occupied for about 10 minutes, and only after that can you consider eating something. DIETING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays can be a tough time for anyone especially when you’re trying to stick to a weight loss plan.  There’s Thanksgiving, holiday parties and gift baskets filled with cookies and treats. There is just no way you can run from it all and as soon as you indulge you go into a guilty food frenzy eating everything and anything you know you shouldn’t.  Here are some tips that will help you get through the holidays without throwing that diet out the window and gaining back everything you worked so hard to loose.

 

 

  • Don’t Skip Meals: This is probably one of the most important things to remember because everyone does it. You tell yourself I’m going to save all my calories for later and starve myself all day.  Anyone who has tried this method should already know it doesn’t work. Starving yourself all day only makes you starving at the party causing you to eat way more than would have if you weren’t so hungry. Depriving yourself  for long periods of time only ignites your appetite beyond control and enhances cravings for "guilty foods” when you finally feed your appetite. Do; however make smarter low calorie choices during the day so you can have extra calories for later.

 

  • Bring Gum: Bring gum to the party to help curb your cravings and pop a piece every time you feel   yourself going for something you really don’t have to have but can’t stop eyeing.   • Portion Control: You can still enjoy the same foods everyone else is enjoying as long as you watch your portion size. Portion control is an important aspect to effective dieting. The best thing to do is to take a smaller plate like an appetizer plate and limit the variety of things you take.

 

  • Drink Seltzer or Water: Try and stay away from the alcohol as those drinks are usually packed with calories and carbs.  Instead drink Seltzer or water especially 30 minutes before eating and it will naturally suppress your appetite so you will eat less.

 

  • Don’t! pass up the pie: Yup, I said it. Take that piece of pie! You earned it.  What I mean is don’t completely eliminate all the guilty foods. So allow yourself some treats here and there and just remember portion control when doing so.

 

  • Grab a Partner: If you’re going to a party and you know another family member or friend that will be there is dieting also stick with them and help each other through the event.  You will be on your best behavior because you will know someone is watching and there will be someone close by who can empathize with you.

 

  • Re-Gift: I know it sounds a little tacky but really who needs the temptation take those gift baskets and fruitcakes and give them to someone else not only do you eliminate temptation but you save yourself some $$.

 

  • Exercise: Ugh... Everyone would love to shrink a size or two in time for summer skin baring fashion.  Losing those accumulated pounds is frustrating and at times overwhelming.  Hang in there though because there are simple little tricks that can help you through the dieting process.  Read on for easy diet tricks:

 

  1. Ice Cubes.  Feel the need to put something in your mouth even though you really should not be “hungry” per se.  Suck on an ice cube.  It is refreshing and calorie free.  You can even add a drop of flavored water to the mix when preparing your ice cubes.

 

  1. Spice it Up.  Add some hot peppers to your recipes. Spicy foods heat up the body, so in order to cool down,  your body requires calories, meaning an increase in your metabolism. When your body speeds up its metabolism it then causes you to burn more calories and lose weight.  The only thing you changed was adding some tasty spices to the mix…so easy!!
