People tend to get really psyched up before they embark on a new weight loss program. By getting carried away with the promise of fitting into a smaller size, we neglected to take into account what's kept us from that smaller size in the first place. We neglected to look at our own eating patterns with an objective eye. 

So before you begin your next diet, ask yourself: what do I struggle with? Is it portion size, or is it the type of food I eat? Do I typically overeat after consuming sugar, or does a big chunk of meat set me off? Do I have a large appetite, but also a high energy level? Instead of trying to fight your tendencies, try to find a weight loss program that embraces them. Low-carb diets like Atkin's and South Beach restrict the type of food you can eat, but don't limit the portions. Weight Watcher's, on the other hand, allows for everything in moderation - portion control is key. A vigorous exercise plan can temper the effect of too many calories consumed.

Becoming more mindful (or being made painfully aware) of these habits can lead to an almost automatic change in behavior.

With a little more effort involved, a food journal can be a good way to understand eating patterns in order to start making changes. Deciding on and introducing a diet can be made most effective when the dieter has a good understanding of where and how the new changes are going to be implemented. Dieters can then plan ahead, writing down future meal plans that bear in mind past tendencies and future goals.

The output must exceed the input. Or, you must burn more calories than you put in your mouth. Or, your caloric intake must be less than your energy expenditure. This is how you lose weight.

It's a simple formula in theory, but not so simple in application. We tend to enjoy food. We are often wired to remain inactive. We like when chips accompany our favorite TV show. But these impulses are what leave us with a positive number at the end of our equation instead of a negative one.

250 (Input of Chips) - 120 (Output from Watching TV + Bodily Functions) = 130.

That's 130 extra calories just sitting around in our guts. Of course, assuming we only ate 250 calories of chips in an hour was rather generous to begin with...so you get the idea.

Sunday is a great day for working out. Ideally, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday would also be great days for working out, but life tends to get in the way more during the work week.

Here are some tips that may make your "Lazy Day" into something a bit more active:

1) Get into gear in the morning. Fitness clothes and sneakers, on - even if you plan on working out in the late afternoon. The less steps between you and the workout, the more likely you are to just do it.
2) Eat a good breakfast. It's easy to nosh all Sunday long, and it's easy to use that as an excuse for delaying exercise. ("But I just ate. I'm going to cramp up!) So: eat a good, filling breakfast, with protein and complex carbs and what-have-you, and simply digest for the next few hours. 
3) Sip a coffee. Close to when you want to exercise, have some caffeine. It might be the small boost you need to feel excited about your work out, instead of weak at the thought of it. Plus, studies have shown that caffeine can significantly improve endurance.

Some foods and herbs slow us down and others are a boost to our system.  If we take a look through the ages we can see many examples of how man and food share history together.  Some rituals change with the passing of time and others remain similar and familiar.

 

 

Food has always been a uniting element between humans.  We use food to mark and celebrate social occasions and even religious rituals.  The following examples are just a sampling of food history throughout the centuries:

 

 

  • In many ancient and modern religions, holy rites are centered around a shared meal that is often made sacred by including ritual ceremonies.
  • Food is also offered after funeral, following the period of bereavement, to remind us that life does and must continue on. Greeks and Romans placed honeyed cakes in graves to protect them against Pluto's three-headed hound, Cereberus, who guarded the gates of the Elysian fields.
  • Hindus even today offer rice cakes to ancestors who wait in the land of the dead for their turn to return to the land of the living.
  • Food habits distinguish religions from one another.  For example: Hindus don’t eat meat. Muslim and Jewish people will only eat halal or kosher meat, and not eat pork.
  • Ancient cultures of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe had religions with sacrificial rituals.
  • The foods that we eat such as raw vs. cooked, vegetables steamed or pickled, spicy or mild, sweet or sour, are all part of our cultural identity. 
  • In India all foods are classified into three categories namely goodness (sattva), passion (rajas) and ignorance (tamas). We have been taught to believe that carbs are BAD and if you eat too many carbs you will gain weight. Therefore I went on a high protein low carb diet. Except for fruits and vegetables I did not eat any other carbs. Guess what – I didn’t lose ANY weight??? I went to research why.

  • Food habits distinguish religions from one another. For example: Hindus don’t eat meat. Muslim and Jewish people will only eat halal or kosher meat, and not eat pork.
  • Ancient cultures of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe had religions with sacrificial rituals.
