Junk Food Can Lead to Depression, Says New Spanish Study

A new Spanish study has revealed that an overabundance of junk food (specifically the trans fats and saturated fatsin your diet could lead to depression. Over a course of six years the diets and lifestyles of over 12,000 volunteers were analyzed, which led to the study's results.

At the beginning of the study, none of the volunteers suffered from depression; by the time the study ended, roughly 600 (5%) were plagued.

"Participants with an elevated consumption of trans fats (fats present in artificial form in industrially produced pastries and fast food...) presented up to a 48% percent increase in the risk of depression when they were compared to participants who did not consume these fats," Almudena Sanchez-Villegas, associate professor of preventative medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, said.

The results of this study, though new, aren't terribly surprising. As much as people might want to eat fatty, sweet foods all the time, they'll inevitably feel better about themselves if they maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Using the Food Pyramid to Lose Weight

Every few years the USDA Food Pyramid  (US Dept. of Agriculture) updates the food pyramid.  It’s not that the old pyramid is no longer valid, however, as we learn more about nutrition, the guidelines are refined and improved slightly. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of the food pyramid, for optimum nutrition.  When you are considering a weight loss plan, it is best to work with the pyramid structure, however you must reduce servings and therefore total calorie intake.

 

Most adults require a calorie intake ranging from 1800-3200 calories a day depending on their age, level of activity and height.  If you want to lose weight you must cut back on the calories you are currently eating. The best way to eat smaller amount of calories is to decrease the quantity of “extras” you are eating—added sugars, solid fats, and alcohol. For example an adult woman, 5’5”, 134lbs who exercises 30 minutes a day or less should consume 1800 calories to maintain her weight. She should be eating the following food groupings daily:

Food has always been a uniting element between humans.  We use food to mark and celebrate social occasions and even religious rituals.  The following examples are just a sampling of food history throughout the centuries:

 

 

  • In many ancient and modern religions, holy rites are centered around a shared meal that is often made sacred by including ritual ceremonies.
  • Food is also offered after funeral, following the period of bereavement, to remind us that life does and must continue on. Greeks and Romans placed honeyed cakes in graves to protect them against Pluto's three-headed hound, Cereberus, who guarded the gates of the Elysian fields.
  • Hindus even today offer rice cakes to ancestors who wait in the land of the dead for their turn to return to the land of the living.
  • Food habits distinguish religions from one another.  For example: Hindus don’t eat meat. Muslim and Jewish people will only eat halal or kosher meat, and not eat pork.
  • Ancient cultures of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe had religions with sacrificial rituals.
  • The foods that we eat such as raw vs. cooked, vegetables steamed or pickled, spicy or mild, sweet or sour, are all part of our cultural identity. 
  • In India all foods are classified into three categories namely goodness (sattva), passion (rajas) and ignorance (tamas).
